She was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska.  She graduated from Central High School in 1981 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from which she graduated in 1986 with a degree in secondary education and endorsements in English and Theatre.  She returned to school for additional endorsements in speech and debate, and also began earning credits toward her Master's degree.  Her family lived in Lincoln until 1997, at which time they moved to Garden City, KS where she taught secondary English at an alternative school for six years.  They then moved to Papillion in the summer of 2003 where she took the English position at IDEAL alternative school.

Her husband and she are the parents of four children ranging in age from 21 to 7; the three youngest attend Papillion-La Vista Schools.
