2008 Summer School Language
Arts Curriculum Guide
Purpose:
The topics of summer school English will include, but not be limited to: reading word identification and comprehension strategies, writing strategies with emphasis on the six traits of writing, study/organizational skills, spelling/vocabulary skills, and speaking/listening skills. Successful completion of this course will lay the foundation for future success in English/Reading.
Course Goals:
Students will demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing,
speaking/listening, study/organization, and spelling/vocabulary skills. Each of these course goals is illustrated in
one or more of the student objectives listed below.
Student Objectives:
Read words at least one grade level above where they
tested at the beginning of summer school.
Use reading comprehension strategies to establish a purpose for reading, find the main ideas, sequence events, and develop vocabulary skills.
Read for pleasure by completing a daily reading log.
Read a play and assign parts to read/act out in class.
Write sentences that vary in length and are clear and
descriptive to read.
Write paragraphs and short essay responses that are
focused and filled with important details; organized with an introduction,
supporting sentences, and a conclusion; conventions correctly used which
include spelling, capitalization, grammar and punctuation.
Use a binder with dividers, a daily planner, and weekly
homework log to improve organizational skills.
Practice and apply study skill strategies, which include
note taking, outlining, and test taking.
Use the daily newspaper to practice and apply the above
reading/English skills. ![]()
