Program Goals: Summer School 2008
The purpose of the Papillion-LaVista Summer School Program is to provide opportunity and support for students who are having difficulties in basic core classes. Students are invited to attend summer school with instruction designed to meet the remediation needs of each student and help these same students succeed at the next grade level. Smaller class sizes (10-15 depending on enrollment) allow for more individualized instruction which has proven to be a cornerstone to the continued success of this summer school program.
Summer School 2008 is designed to help those students that have demonstrated the willingness to work at their studies, but still struggle in certain areas. Therefore, students must be recommended by a staff member for admission into Summer School 2008.
Effective and timely communication with parents is also a program goal and another cornerstone to the success of the summer school program. At the end of each week, each student will bring home a progress report that will include academic as well as student behavior comments.
Language Arts instruction will focus on reading, finding main ideas, organizational skills, effective note taking, vocabulary development, grammar concepts, and comprehension strategies. The curriculum has been expanded to include practice in reading comprehension, research methods, journal writing, and composition development.
Math instruction will focus on helping students develop competency in arithmetic and mental math. A variety of activities and the use of technology will concentrate on mastery of fractions, decimals, percents, and integers. The curriculum has been expanded to incorporate career applications and real life experiences related to various math topics and pre-algebra basics.
