2008 Summer School Math Curriculum Guide 7/8
Purpose:
The topics of the eighth grade summer school math course will include, but not be limited to, basic operations, proportion, percent, number theory and equations, statistics, probability, graphing, problem solving, and project-based topic studies. Successful completion of this course will lay the foundation for future success in mathematics.
Course
Goals:
Students
will demonstrate proficiency in mathematics calculations, reasoning, problem
solving, and communication. Each of
these course goals is illustrated in one or more of the student objectives
listed below.
Student
Objectives:
Perform
the four basic operations using whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and
percents.
Communicate
numerical place values.
Round
numbers and decimals to specific place values.
Use
estimation strategies on whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and
percents.
Convert
rational numbers to percents and vice versa.
Solve
proportions and percents.
Substitute,
simplify, and solve variable expressions.
Compute
the value of a numerical expression by applying the order of operations.
Simplify
algebraic equations, using mathematical properties.
Compute
measures of central tendency and solve basic probability problems.
Identify
and graph ordered pairs of integers in the coordinate plane.
Graph linear equations using a table of values.
Solve
word problems by applying problem-solving strategies involving whole numbers,
integers, rational numbers, and percents.
Identify and apply appropriate mathematical operations in
