2008 Summer School Math Curriculum Guide 7/8

Purpose:

The topics of the eighth grade summer school math course will include, but not be limited to, basic operations, proportion, percent, number theory and equations, statistics, probability, graphing, problem solving, and project-based topic studies.  Successful completion of this course will lay the foundation for future success in mathematics.

Course Goals:

Students will demonstrate proficiency in mathematics calculations, reasoning, problem solving, and communication.  Each of these course goals is illustrated in one or more of the student objectives listed below.

Student Objectives:

Perform the four basic operations using whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and percents.

Communicate numerical place values.

Round numbers and decimals to specific place values.

Use estimation strategies on whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and percents.

Convert rational numbers to percents and vice versa.

Solve proportions and percents.

Substitute, simplify, and solve variable expressions.

Compute the value of a numerical expression by applying the order of operations.

Simplify algebraic equations, using mathematical properties.

Compute measures of central tendency and solve basic probability problems.

Identify and graph ordered pairs of integers in the coordinate plane.

Graph linear equations using a table of values.

Solve word problems by applying problem-solving strategies involving whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and percents.

Identify and apply appropriate mathematical operations in solving application problems.
