  • Achievement, Perception, & Program Data
    • Steady improvement in triangulated achievement areas, other than that of fluency
    • Consistent Drop Everything and Read Mondays, during Titan Time, models reading as a priority to support students’ reading attitudes
    • Reading class (7th) provides students with an important opportunity to build essential cross-content literacy skills.
      • A greater percentage of 7th graders are reading at or above grade level.
82
Next Steps in Reading
  • The 7th grade Reading curriculum will be aligned with the 3rd – 6th grade reading curriculum according to national recommendations for effective adolescent literacy programs.
  • Professional development opportunities for reading teachers will be investigated.
  • Based on the “To Read or Not to Read” study, less than 1/3 of 13 year olds are daily readers, a 14% decline from 20 years ago. Time will be allotted for SSR.
    • Consider reading as homework for all
    • Continue to encourage students to utilize graphic organizers

Writing Goal Highlights
  • Achievement, Perception, Program Data
  • Steady improvement in NRT and State Writing, including that of closing the gender gap, is noted, yet CSA achievement data stands out as an area for improvement
  • Staff and students’ writing perceptions have improved over a period of 5 years. And, departments have also increased the number of writing opportunities in their classrooms.
  • Titan Time writing has allowed all content area teachers to discuss quality writing using a common language.  In addition, weekly Titan Time journaling and providing students timely feedback about their writing has become common practice.
98
Next Steps in Writing
  • Common summative assessments and scoring rubrics will continue to be improved upon through Curriculum Toolbox (“kid-friendly” recommendation).
  • Time for content-area teachers to double score writing assessments will be allotted as will be time for staff development opportunities.
  • Titan Time journaling and quarterly prompts will evolve to support student learning across core areas, which will continue to include feedback to students.
